Is There Downtime After BOTOX® Treatment?

BOTOX injections are considered routine and convenient, with many patients scheduling BOTOX during a quick lunch break or between errands. While there is virtually no preparation or downtime needed with BOTOX, there still are a few important things to keep in mind before and after getting BOTOX to ensure the best possible experience and results. For example, patients should generally refrain from drinking alcohol in the immediate period prior to their appointment, and it’s recommended to avoid touching, rubbing, or massaging your face for about 1 – 2 days after. Here, Jeanine Christian-La Touche, MSA, CRNA, and our friendly team at La Touche Élite Aesthetics share more information on what to know about getting BOTOX in Myrtle Beach, SC, including what not to do after BOTOX, how to prepare for BOTOX, and more.

Do I need to do anything before BOTOX?

Preparing for BOTOX wrinkle relaxers is simple, but taking a few precautions beforehand may help minimize bruising and ensure your appointment goes as smoothly as possible. Before your BOTOX treatment in Myrtle Beach, it is generally recommended to:

  • Avoid alcohol for about 24 hours beforehand
  • Avoid blood-thinning medications or supplements when medically appropriate and approved by your physician (note: never adjust or stop any medications without the approval of your prescribing provider)
  • Arrive with clean skin free of makeup when possible
  • Discuss any medical conditions, medications, or recent cosmetic treatments

These simple steps can help optimize your treatment experience and reduce the likelihood of temporary bruising or irritation at the injection sites.

Can I go back to work right after BOTOX injections?

One of the most compelling advantages of BOTOX is that there is little-to-no downtime after treatment. Most patients return to work, run errands, or resume their normal daily routine almost immediately after their appointment. You may notice minor redness, swelling, or small bumps at the injection sites for a short period of time, but these effects typically resolve quickly and are often subtle enough that others won't notice. Because treatment usually takes only a few minutes, BOTOX continues to be one of the most convenient cosmetic procedures available.

Are there any restrictions after BOTOX?

Although you won't need to recover at home, following your post-treatment instructions is an important part of achieving the best possible results. After BOTOX, patients are generally advised to:

  • Avoid rubbing or massaging the treated area
  • Remain upright for several hours after treatment
  • Avoid strenuous exercise until the following day or as directed
  • Skip saunas, hot tubs, and excessive heat for the first 24 hours
  • Follow any additional instructions provided after your appointment

These temporary precautions help keep the product where it was intentionally placed while it begins taking effect.

Will I feel sore after getting BOTOX for wrinkles?

Most patients describe BOTOX injections as very well tolerated. Because an extremely small needle is used, discomfort during treatment is minimal and short-lived. Afterward, you may experience mild tenderness, slight swelling, or minor bruising at some injection sites. Some patients also notice a temporary sensation of tightness as the treatment begins working over the next several days. These effects are generally mild and resolve without additional treatment.

How long will my BOTOX last?

BOTOX does not produce immediate results in the same way that dermal fillers do. Instead, the medication gradually relaxes the targeted muscles over the course of several days, with optimal BOTOX results typically becoming noticeable within about 7 – 10 days. For most patients, the smoothing effects of BOTOX last approximately 3 – 4 months before muscle movement gradually returns. Scheduling maintenance treatments at appropriate intervals can help preserve consistently refreshed, natural-looking results over time.
